Linee Folk e cromatismo post romantico si trovano nei brani di questo lavoro in Duo.
Jan Garbarek sax e flauto e all'organo da chiesa il connazionale Kjell Johnsen qui certamente non danno all'ascoltatore impressioni per un ascolto swingante, anzi. Forse le critiche ricevute all'uscita di questo lavoro erano sviluppate proprio da questo tipo di ascoltatori dove per loro Garbarek non è jazz. Per me Garbarek è un musicista ricercatore per questo lo adoro.
Certamente il disco non è di facile ascolto ma è molto bello ed interessante.
Da ascoltare a piccole dosi.

Il disco di Garbarek invece è consigliatissimo

I no longer remember what made me buy my first Jan Garbarek album [the 1984 compilation "Works" in case you're interested], a random purchase driven more by the cover than the content I suspect. I didn't know anything about Garbarek at the time but whatever it was that inspired that purchase it has a lot of CDs and concerts to answer for. Thirty years on and my love affair with Garbarek's, and the wider ECM community of artists music continues; and now with more time on my hands to listen I've started filling in the gaps in my collection; and this week the postman delivered "Aftenland" [or in English "evening country"] , Garbarek's 1980 collaboration with organist Kjell Johnsen.

By and large, and I'll come to the exception in a moment the format here is relatively simple and many of the tracks are quite similar. Johnsen uses the pipe organ to set up a drone over which he lays his notes creating a background that's reminiscent of a gothic film noir soundtrack across which Garbarek threads clean sharp-edged piercing solos from his tenor and soprano saxophones that build and shatter the tension created by Johnsen. Sometimes the two instruments act independently and sometimes Garbarek and Johnsen interplay working off each other in call and response routines.

The exception is the seventh track [why did it have to be the seventh and not the easier to skip first or last?] "Spill" [or "Game" in English] that I don't like and hence the loss of a star. This time there's no drone and instead Johnsen and Garbarek now playing a wood flute [is this just a recorder?] create a game of interweaving helter-skelter strings of skittish notes, it lacks the bedrock of the drone, it's too fast and it's uncomfortably high-pitched and above all it breaks the relaxed mood of the preceding tracks. I could also take exception to the slightly abrupt ending to the final track "Tegn", but that's just being picky and because I didn't want it to end.

This is Jan Garbarek at his most imaginative and creative, but it's not one that's going to please many jazz aficionados because (leaving aside that seventh track) what he gives us here is a set of sparse, ambient, meditative, new-age'y textures, perhaps the ideal music to relax to but it's not really jazz as we know it.

If you like "Dis" you'll probably like "Aftenland" [but take my advice and skip track seven].

If you are a fan of Jan Garbarek you will love this CD. In many ways it is a different recording when compared with his others. Johnson's subdued organ is the drone that Garbarek solos over with his traditional cutting and piercing style of play. It is an ambient recording that has a gothic quality to it. Highly recommended!
