This is an album of cover versions by Susanna and the Magical Orchestra. The cover of the famous Joy Division " Love will tear us Apart", one of my all time favorite songs, is the most haunting and exquisite cover version I have ever heard. I bought the album for this song and I enjoy many of the other covers songs too.. interesting band.

die leiseren Töne werden ja gern überhört. Zu Unrecht!
Ich hab dieses Duo nur per Zufall für mich entdeckt (aufmerksames Zeitunglesen)- aus dem Alter für Spex und sonstige Fachzeitschriften ist man ja langsam raus...

Susanna Wallumröd hat eine atemberaubend schöne Gesangsstimme, und sie kann sich in Songs erstaunlich einfühlen, bzw. interpretiert die Klassiker (um solche handelt es sich auf diesem Covers-Album) mit dem magischen Orchester (das ja wohl nur aus einer weiteren Person besteht) auf eine elegisch-schöne Weise.

Durch die Düsternis der Cover (auch Flower of Evil ist sehr gut) soll man sich nicht abschrecken lassen!
Ich hätte nie gedacht, dass ich in meinem Leben mal den Leonard Cohen Song "hallelujah" in den Pop-Himmel loben würde. Aber der steht jetzt auf dem Gipfel des Berges der Melodien -- also: knieet nieder, Musikgläubige! hier ist die reine Schönheit, und Klarheit, und Wahrheit.

Susanna & the Magical Orchestraとは、susanna wallumrod(vocals)とmorten qvenild(piano.keyboards)によるユニット。本作は、そのセカンドアルバム。
同じオーケストラでも、YMOより更に１名少ないようです。
プロデュースは、Rune Grammofon仲間のHelge Sten(Deathprod)。
Helge Stenといえばsupersilentですが、本作は趣向の異なる歌ものとはいえ、彼の素晴らしい音響センスが最大限に活かされた傑作だと思います。
インストの全てを担うmorten qvenildは、自身のトリオIn The Countryでも活躍中。susannaの最大の理解者として、その歌声の持つ魅力を十全に引き出しているのではないでしょうか？
しかし、この優しく心の底まで浸みこんでくるような歌声をなんと表現したら良いのでしょう。
数オクターブの声域を誇るわけでもなく、どちらかといえば淡々と歌い継いでいくのですが、その流れに身を任せるしかないような心地良さがあります。
その歌声は天からの授かりものか？
Leonard CohenのHallelujahから始まるカバー曲集は、もともとの楽曲の良さと相まって、貴方の耳を惹きつけて離さないと思います。
ダークな雰囲気のジャケットも素晴らしい。

This album is truly one of the most beautiful I've ever heard. It is so rich in authenticity and emotional feeling, despite the fact that these songs are actually covers.

Part of the reason the emotion comes through so well is through the simplicity of the arrangements. There's a guy on a synth/piano/harpsichord/keyboard (Morten Qvenild), and there's a beautiful and extremely talented singer (Susanna Karolina Wallumrød). That's it. The production is high quality and allows the music to do all the talking. There is no multi-layered orchestra, there are no backing singers, no layered vocals, no percussion, no beats. Anyone looking for a contemporary pop record, or expecting to find the usual 'cover' treatment will find something unexpected here.

Despite these songs being covers, the duo make each track their own. There are extremely odd choices and interpretations, but each one works brilliantly. Susanna's vocal delivery and Morten's delicate score makes each track feel extremely personal, deep, and emotional. If you've ever heard Johnny Cash's cover of 'Hurt' you will be aware of how a cover can be taken and changed into something completely different, something every bit as powerful and more than the original. Something that resonates at a deeper emotional pitch. Every track here achieves the same effect.

It's a slow burning ember of an album, and I adore it for its simplicity, beauty, and ability to speak directly to my soul.

I recommend this album to any music fan, but beware those looking for easy-access pop, or expecting to hear music even vaguely similar to the original tracks from which these covers are taken. You'll need an open mind to hear this properly. You won't go far wrong blacking out the room and lighting a candle or two while you listen either.

Heard the cover of Love Will Tear Us Apart on a Mojo Magazine sampler and went for the full album, So beautiful. They are very slow, minimal, play this after any Red House Painter's album. Great late at night. LOVE IT! It is always great to hear cover versions that don't attempt to replicate the original versions. Why bother. This is great!
