Morrison has never quite achieved the same level of excellence that he did with "Astral Weeks", BUT "Common One" comes closest. Side 1 (1st 3 cuts) is superb; side 2 (remaining 3 cuts) is lower-keyed, with a deft touch of the "quiet" that compels as well. The album opens on a lovely slow note: 'Haunts of Ancient Peace"; then we go into an amazing extended piece 'Summertime in England'; and finally the hypnotic 'Satisfied'. A heartfelt hymn, a name-checking walk through England's literary past, and a joyous funky romp. The second side (#s 4-6) offers an alternative: a suite built on softness, stillness, openness and quietude. "Astral Weeks" gave us Morrison's fascination with his Belfast youth and with his poetry; his voice is a mix of the spoken, the sung, and the chanted. On "Common One", he's burst the parochial bonds imposed by his Ulster upbringing, and he's discovered the beauty that was denied him before. And that voice! No one could call it beautiful in the classic sense, but what an instrument!
