Questo bellissimo Blu ray made in West Germany è una delle registrazioni a 7.1 canali esistenti in commercio qui in Italia (purtroppo ancora poche , ma spero di più in un prossimo futuro). L'audio 7.1 canali consente una distribuzione spaziale del suono a trecentosessantagradi assolutamente fantastica (un esperienza irripetibile...), mentre il DTS-masteraudio garantisce la migliore performance a livello di densità sonora. Personalmente tra i due capolavori del melodramma italiano preferisco il lavoro di Mascagni che unisce ad una visione della vita assai fruibile, oserei dire popolare una godibilità armonica eccellente. L'opera è intrisa di autentico spirito romantico, ma anche di una religiosità vera che scaturisce direttamente dal cuore del compositore. L'opera infatti si ispira per buona parte ad una precedente bellissima Ave Maria che costituisce il fulcro artistico e morale dell'intera composizione. L'aria di Leoncavallo Vesti la Giubba non ha bisogno d'essere commentata.

Discreta l'esecuzione,buona l'interpetrazione anche se il tenore nei pagliacci è un pò troppo caricato;buona invece l'interpretazione dello stesso tenore, josè cura,nella cavalleria rusticana.

Finally, a Cav/Pag I can love and view over and over again. I am still recovering from "Bohemes" starring tenors with slicked down hair achieved by the application of Walmart's entire weekly supply of gel. Tenors who outweigh the entire cast are a turn off for me. Yes, Pavarotti, etc. are the exceptions but when attention to size is amplified by lack of acting ability - I suffer as a viewer. This blu ray features a superlative cast that is masterfully directed and staged. As a professional theatre director of many decades, I am in awe of the attempt and success of these one acts. The acting ability (yes, operatic performers should know how to act as well as sing) of the entire company is most impressive. The use of minimal scenery while still maintaining the period 'feel' of the designs is also much appreciated. I am still recovering from being subjected to another Cav/Pag that presented a stage populated by black boxes of varying sizes and costumes that were similarly annoying and somber. Bravo and kudos for this blu ray; what an excellent intro to these two minor masterpieces for students as well as the more jaded.

J'ai déjà acheté dans la collection catalogue d'Arthaus : La Traviata, Rigoletto, La Tosca, Elektra et maintenant le duo Cavalleria Rusticana-I Pagliacci.
On peut trouver chez Arthaus Musik tous ces titres sans le catalogue d'extraits inclus dans les blurays, mais il faut payer 3 à 5 fois plus cher sans avoir rien de plus pour l'œuvre principale. Alors autant acheter ces titres entre 7 et 10 euros, et si ça vous intéresse vous regardez le catalogue. Arthaus Musik est passé pour ce dernier de 26 extraits dans La Traviata à 50 dans Cavalleria pour une durée totale d'environ 150 mn.
En ce qui concerne les deux opéras de ce bluray, il s'agit d'un enregistrement en direct réalisé en 2009 à l'Opéra de Zürich.
L'image haute définition est absolument remarquable comme c'est toujours le cas chez cet éditeur. Un avis publié en anglais (venant d'Amazon.com) fait une critique sur la prise de son, ce qui serait quand même ennuyeux pour des opéras. Personnellement en utilisant le câble RCA depuis le lecteur de bluray Philips (qui date de 2009) à la prise pour jack de ma micro chaîne Sony, je trouve que la qualité sonore est remarquable. Ceci dit je ne suis pas spécialiste en technique , et je ne fais part que de mon ressenti.
Les mises en scène sur un plateau de taille quand même moins important que ceux du Met de New York ou de l'Opéra Bastille de Paris, sont de toute beauté tant pour les décors que pour les costumes. Par ailleurs l'avantage d'une scène de taille moyenne comme celle de Zürich est que l'on se sent plus concerné par la dramaturgie , que par exemple, les deux mêmes œuvres vues en retransmission depuis les Chorégies d4orange, avec Roberto Alagna, et qui m'avaient un peu déçu.

Le metteur en scène a choisi de situer l'action des deux opéras dans une période 1920-1930, d'où les costumes adéquats, ainsi que les accessoires (vélos ou autres)
Dans cette optique pour Cavalleria Rusticana, de Pietro Mascagni,, l'équipe qui entoure le personnage d'Alfio est un clone de la bande d'Al Capone, mais n'oublions pas que nous sommes au pays de la Mafia ! L'opéra est dominé et de très loin par le tandem José Cura (Turridu) et surtout Paoletta Marrocu (Santuzza). Je suis moins impressionné par Liliana Nikiteanu (Lola). Les chœurs et l'orchestre admirables. J'ai regardé cet opéra, pas très long c'est vrai (1h20mn) d'une traite tellement j'étais pris par la dramaturgie.
Même impression pour Pagliacci, de Ruggero Leoncavallo, qui par tradition est quasiment toujours représenté simultanément avec Cavallieria .Les chœurs et l'orchestre également admirables. José Cura (Canio) aussi bon que dans l'opéra précédent. Carlo Guelfi dans le double rôle du Prologue et de Tonio : une merveille. Je n'aurai une réserve que pour Fiorenza Ceddolins (Nedda) : je préfére dans l'air des oiseaux Pilar Lorengar dans ma vieille version vinyle des années 60.le final avec la mort sur scène de Nedda et Silvio : on a beau connaître le dénouement, le jeu des artistes vous fait frémir quand même , enfin dans mon cas.
En conclusion ne vous privez pour 9 € d'un tel bluray avec une représentation aussi admirable de ces deux opéras.

I have over 150 classical DVD/BRs that I watch on a 120" screen and listen through a 7.2 loudspeaker setup where the front speakers are about 9' 6" apart and the surround / surround back speakers are placed where they ought to be. The room has sound treatments so I hear what's on the disc, not distorting reflections from the walls and ceiling. My reviews concentrate on the surround audio, as you can pretty much judge the video and stereo for yourself on youtube and similar sites.

My collection includes the 1982 Zeffirelli movie with Domingo/Obraztsova which has a 5.1 DTS sound track and has been played many many times. I tried the Teatro Real blu-ray version some years ago and was disappointed with that surround sound in the Cav. Finally another blu-ray, this time from the Opernhaus Zuerich.

Menu allows to choose between Cav and Pag, but you have to resort to the pop-up key to select audio and subtitles. A minor annoyance. You would think that after so many years of menu design you would get one with all the options on the first screen.

Picture is fine as usual with blu-rays.
Sound is DTS 7.1 HD, you can't get it much better than that.

Orchestra is recorded quite detailed, sound stage is pretty much 180 degrees. Balance with chorus and voices is fine. It's a body mics recording with the voices mostly coming from the middle, my only small complaint. I liked all the voices and the direction is also somewhat conservative, even a progressively more drunken Pag is acceptable to me. It is also well acted by most principals.

This is quite a step-up in sound quality compared to the Zeffirelli film, especially Obraztsova's voice, which is a bit harsh, so it's a heartfelt “So long Placido, hello Jose”.

As I can't give it 4.5 stars, I give it 4 stars, as I still prefer the voices moving across the stage a bit more than they do here.

The Bonus feature has only stereo sound, so it's not worth much to me. But if it lowers the price of this Blu-ray, who would complain?
